DEAF POETS ARE AN AMERICAN GARAGE/ALTERNATIVE ROCK DUO CONSISTING OF SEAN WOUTERS AND NICO ESPINOSA, BORN IN MIAMI BEACH, FL AND CURRENTLY BASED IN BROOKLYN, NY. THEIR MUSIC IS UNABASHEDLY RAW, RAUCOUS, AND LOUD, RAGING THROUGH THE WILD BUZZ AND HISS OF WOUTER’S DISTORTED GUITARS AND THE FEVER-PITCH HITS AND PULSATING MOMENTUM OF ESPINOSA’S DRUMS. THEIR BOYHOOD ROCK AND ROLL IDOLS, FROM JIMMY PAGE TO KURT COBAIN, EVENTUALLY BECAME THEIR INFLUENCES AS THEY COMBINED ELEMENTS OF ‘70S ROCK AND A SHOT OF ‘90S GRUNGE TO DEFINE THEIR SOUND. Hi guys! Can you briefly introduce each other and the band?
Nico: Deaf Poets is the brainchild of two childhood friends (Sean and myself) that needed an outlet to escape reality and find a medium to express who we are to the masses. We met in 5th grade and first communicated with each other by sharing our drawings. Sean was a shy, quiet kid and I had just moved to the States from Argentina, so there was a huge language barrier and art connected us. Ever since, we’ve been collaborating artistically in some capacity and eventually it led to this project. We love rock and roll and spent many nights listening to classics like Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd to name a few. At 14 he picked me and my drums up from my house with the same truck we use for tour today. We grew up in Miami, FL and over a year ago relocated to New York City in search for a new beginning.
Nico Espinosa: Drums/Vocals
Sean Wouters: Guitar/ Lead Vocals
Deaf Poets, why?
Nico: Not only did we play music together, we also worked the same retail job out of high school. While mindlessly folding “Dead Poet Society” t-shirts (Robin Williams film), the name really stuck out to me. The “dead” part didn’t necessarily fit the vibe we were going for. We knew we had a message to share with our music but we thought that our poetry would fall on deaf ears. Hence Deaf Poets!
How would you describe your music in 3 words?
Nico: RIP. SHIT. RIOT.
Do you have a ritual before going on stage?
Nico: When we are getting in the zone, we like to dig deep into the cannabis world.
Expectations and goals for 2019.
Nico: Our goal for 2019 is to tour internationally and go for broke. We joined Outer Orbit Booking this year which has opened opportunities for touring the US. We are super excited to heading overseas and sharing our music with South Africa at the end of April and another goal is to play in Europe in the fall. In between, we are working on new material for our next full-length record.
