FROM TOKYO, JAPAN, YAHYEL FORMED IN EARLY 2015 AND WE MEET THEM IN AUSTIN DURING THE LAST EDITION OF SXSW. HERE’S MORE ABOUT A BAND TO DISCOVER.
Can you do a short introduction of the band?
We are yahyel, a Tokyo-based electro band. Combining fragile lyrics with dark soundscapes, Yahyel paint potent portraits of life, peppered with both dystopian imagery and blistering honesty. Our music is often described as a “musical cyber punk” in modern counter culture towards the stereotype of East.
Where does your stage name come from?
The word “yahyel” comes from American new-age cult, and means “Alien”. The prophecy tells that human civilization encounter the alien civilization called “yahyel” in 2015. Not only we formed the band in 2015, but also we ironically called ourselves “alien” because being a Japanese musician without stereotypical “oriental” gimmicks has always made us feel alienated in the international music scene.
Can you tell us 3 words to descrive your music?
3. Mad danceable
A ritual before going on stage.
We always make a small circle with 4 of us, and promise ourselves to shock audience to encounter something completely out-of-box.
What’s your main goal for 2019?
We have our tour to China in May and in Europe in June. We really want to release our new tunes in US this year to come back!
How was your SXSW?
It is always absolute pleasure to play in front of this audience. This is the kind of moment you realized how truthfully borderless this experience is. It was so hard to leave the friends we made over SXSW though.
