“When I am trying to be true to myself, I turn “myself” into a genre, with readily recognisable and repeatable tropes. I can never be authentic, only authentically feel myself. Closing my self from the outside, i can create and meet a set of established stereotypes of myself. Being oneself always means being a self-parody, and being a parody of oneself is the process of self-discovery. Self-parody precedes selfhood. And here are the references for this project: “isolated Heroes” by David Sims and Raf Simons, Trash Humpers by Harmony Korine, Windowlicker by Aphex Twin. It’s a mix of the classic portraiture practise with a contemporary idea of identity and “self” based on parody, characterisation and monsters! (Valeriya Polivanova)”
