IN THE SUMMER OF 2015, THE SONG "LEAN ON" BY MAJOR LAZER AND DJ SNAKE WAS NEARLY INESCAPABLE. THE SUMMER ANTHEM, WHICH WENT TO GENERATE OVER 1 BILLION STREAMS, FEATURED A RELATIVELY UNKNOWN DANISH ARTIST. IT LAUNCHED SINGER KAREN MARIE AAGAARD ØRSTED ANDERSEN — BETTER KNOWN AS MØ — INTO THE MAINSTREAM. LAST SATURDAY WE HAD A CHAT WITH HER WHILE SHE WAS DOING THE REHEARSAL AT FABRIQUE TO PRESENT HER NEW ALBUM: FOREVER NEVERLAND.
On Forever Neverland, Andersen’s personality and passion shine through. She says transparency is a key part of her songwriting process. Karen, welcome to Milan! Forever Neverland is your second album. Tell us about it.
It took me more than four years to prepare it and it’s really exciting to see the result after so long. After the great success on my song Lean On i really had to combined the new mainstream modern pop with my indie mellow sound from the first album and it took time to connect the different sounds together but i am extremely happy of what i have now and hope you will all love the show tonight. You started traveling around Europe one week ago. What do you love about touring?
Well, i do love traveling and meeting friends around so is something that i really like to do. I love mainly all the things related to travel with my caravan, the daily routine, the little gestures. Makes me feel in such a pleasant situation.
The song ‘Lean On’ has been on of the most listened-to track of 2015, three times platinum record, 2.4 billion hits on YouTube and at one point the most-streamed song in Spotify history. It would have been a hard act for anyone to follow. How did you felt about it?
The truth? I did not quite understand what was going on at the time. Hope you understand what i want to say with this. I mean, everything was so fast, i had so much attention around me and the feeling was hard to describe. I was surprised and pleased at the same time, but it was like i was watching the whole situation from the outside… hard to digest sometimes but fabulous at the same time!
How do you manage stress?
Well, it’s something that is really important to manage because the music world is pretty crazy sometimes. I actually do all classics things: take a day off when i need it, talk to good friends, do yoga whenever i can, eat healthy, sleep at least 7 hours per night. I like to take care of myself and feel good and strong.
How do you see yourself in 10 years?
I am very bad at this, i honestly just think and try to live the now, the moment. But if i think about my future i would like to keep doing what i do, work hard and be nice to people.
