REDMILK LOVES OUT OF THE BOX MINDS! DISCOVER THE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH STEF VAN LOOVEREN.
1.Tell me a story that has happened to you that could only happen in your hometown.
My mum giving birth to me.
2.If I gave you a 1.000$ shopping spree online where will you shop beside Amazon?
3.Currently who is your favorite artist what about their work inspires you?
I honestly never have one favorite artist, but a list of Artist that inspired me and keep on inspiring me. Jack smith, Nan Goldin, David Wojnarowicz, Leigh Bowery, Audrey Lorde, Matthew Barney, Donna Huanca, Korakrit Arunanondchai… I can keep on going but the artist I fell in love with most recently is Anna Uddenberg, I totally adore her refined humor!
4.It’s apparent that you have a unique aesthetic and personality. So what was the threshold that made you share it with the world?
I believe as gay men we’re often placed in a position that requires us to be present and very alive in order to be heard. For me this started out from a very young age by challenging heteronormative aesthetics in my daily life, which made me understand the importance of visibility, by raising questions and showing new possibilities, and so it became the fuel to my work.
5.There is a lot of concern with overconsumption of non reusable materials in everyday products. But how do you feel about the use of the same products in fashion items such as bags, clothing shoes and accessories?
I’m currently working on a collection of portable sculptures that I call functionless DICK/PUSSY/ASS bags, made out of silicone. This never came out of a fashion perspective, but by questioning our bodies -or to be specific our sexed bodies- in relation to fashion items. These items become tools to simply dismantle a social construct partly made up by and communicated through fashion. Having that said I believe fashion and art take part in an archive that either forms or mirrors a certain decade, it becomes a document of time and shouldn’t be thrown away, but reused, recreated and transformed, unlike most everyday products.
6.What is your favorite jungle animal? And why?
A snake, because they shed their skin as they grow.
