FOR THE AUGUST ISSUE REDMILK HAS SELECTED INTERESTING ARTISTS TO REINTERPRETE SOME EDITORIALS OF THE MAGAZINE. DISCOVER THE CREATIVITY OF VAKSEEN ART!
How do you define your art?
Vanity Pop. That’s the term I coined to describe my painting style. Vanity Pop is a celebration of women, beauty, fashion, pop culture, insecurities, duality and self preservation. With that as the foundation of each piece, I paint these abstract portraits that are juxtaposed with diverse, “perfect” features. While my portraits look like they’re simple collages, they’re all hand-painted directly on canvas to blur the boundaries between perception and reality. I do this to represent the fragmentation within us all as we strive for acceptance in life. My portraits are basically a visual conversation about our society’s idolization of beauty, the cosmetic enhancements endured to meet the status quo and the impact this has on popular culture.
What do you usually get inspiration from?
Women, first and foremost. Pop culture, fashion, music, the LA scene and my personal experiences living as a black man in America.
Your first job.
McDonald’s in high school.
Your everyday ritual.
My 3 key essentials are gym, creative time and family time. Everything else is interchangeable.
Your most beautiful quality and your fault.
I tend to think about others before myself. I have a huge heart, which ironically is the answer to both. It’s an amazing thing to have but people will spend a lifetime trying to take advantage of a giving heart.
Your next project?
Life is pretty exciting right now. I just had my first child, so he’s a lifetime project lol. I have a lot of great gallery shows coming up in Los Angeles and I’m preparing for my second museum show of 2018. I just signed to a Seoul-based entertainment agency so my art is fully represented in Asia now. We’re kickstarting a lot of exciting projects that I can’t wait to share! Not to mention, I’m always creating new art and finding creative ways to share it with the world. I always have a full plate, which is a major blessing!
