FOR THE AUGUST ISSUE REDMILK HAS SELECTED INTERESTING ARTISTS TO REINTERPRETE SOME EDITORIALS OF THE MAGAZINE. DISCOVER THE CREATIVITY OF COLETTE VERMEULEN!
How do you define your art?
Colourful, textured, intuitive, raw and to an extend naive, but with a richness and depth within that.
Where do you usually get inspiration from?
From anything from vintage clothes to modern art, architecture and product design, books with old craft techniques, things I see on the street, always nature, plants and animals, but the best ideas occur when I talk to friends or colleagues about projects and hear their angle on something or hear them talk about their work and ideas.
Your first job.
My first job as a teenager was sorting apples by size on a farm in the country side. My first grownup job was fashion womenswear designer at the London based fashion brand Roksanda.
Your everyday ritual.
I like to wake up early and have some time before work to just drink coffee and think about the day, not really do anything, this is when I get super exciting ideas and I need to make sure to write them down before they disappear. Then I like to walk as much as I can during my day, instead of taking public transport, it’s also when I think a lot and get really inspired.
Your most beautiful quality and your fault.
I am very intuitive, that means I can’t really do things when they don’t ‘feel right’. This means that whatever I do and make is really genuine and from the gut/heart, and it’s how I relate to people at work too. This however doesn’t make me a very good ‘business person’ or good at negotiating, but for me it’s the only way I can work.
Your next project.
I want to take my collages in new directions such as textiles and furniture, I am also working on reinterpreting them into different print techniques such as risograph and screen printing, and maybe take them more towards illustrations. Two very different directions, but I really enjoy working on different disciplines simultaneously.
