Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Octo Octa (aka Maya Bouldry-Morrison), has stepped into the music scene in 2011 with 100% Silk, a label she contributed promoting with her captivating house music and 2013 EP “Between Two Selves”. Since then, her music has been exploring the not so easy themes of personal fulfillment and identity, as if it were the expression of an inevitable link. 2017 “Where Are We Going?” is her first EP she released with San Francisco HNTRX label since publicly transitioning, its name leaning towards a certain amount of ambiguity and depth, its tracks gently taking you by hand through a dreamy-house start, to a darker place made of hypnotic pulses and harsher synths. For our Social Interview Maya decided to answer our 7 questions with 7 tweets that will surely intrigue you enough to learn more on this precious talent.
How would you describe your music?
For better or worse, my music is the embodiment of my emotional interactions with the world and my attempt to translate them to music.
When and why did you decide to become a producer?
I’ve been making electronic music since I was 15 and wanted to DJ since I was 13. It was never really a choice haha!
What is the record that changed your life?
It would have been a drum n bass track. DnB was the first thing that blew my mind. This was the first record I bought that I fell in love with as a young girl ~
What’s your guilty pleasure?
I absolutely love breakcore which came into my life via DnB/Drill n Bass. I don’t consider it a guitly pleasure, but I know a lot of people don’t want to listen to it ~
What’s the thing you can’t live without?
My wife. She means the world to me and I’m not sure where I would be without her <3
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I have absolutely no idea! Hopefully still in the woods making music :)
