A NIGHT LIKE THIS FESTIVAL HOSTED FOR ITS 6TH EDITION LOS ANGELES BAND DEAP VALLY. THE GROUP CONSISTS OF LINDSEY TROY (GUITAR, VOCALS) AND JULIE EDWARDS (DRUMS AND VOCALS). THEY ARE HOT AND MAKE A LOT OF NOISE AND LOOKING AT THEM, YOU WOULD NOT THINK THEY MET IN A CROCHET CLASS. THEY ROCK AND THEY KNIT, LET’S DEAL WITH IT. WE INTERVIEWED TWO-GIRL GUITAR'N'DRUMS DUO FROM LA BEFORE THEIR GIG IN ITALY.
Hello Lindsey and Julie, can you tell us the origin of the name of the band and how you two met?
Deap Vally refers to “the valley”. We’re valley girls. Like, totally! We met when I walked into the Little Knittery in L.A. to learn how to crochet. Julie was the owner of the shop and I took a crochet class from her. Somehow that led to a rock band…
You are from Los Angeles: does the city influence your music and why?
It must. We would imagine every artist’s environment influences their work. There is long tradition of ‘showbiz’ in Los Angeles. Maybe that’s why we’re so into the live element and sequins…
Your new album is titled ‘Femejism’, can we say it is a sort of manifesto of modern womanwood? Can you tell us more about this inspiration and mood?
Femejism is a sincere and heartfelt record with a sense of humor. We stand behind everything we sing about, so if that makes it an modern manifesto of womanhood then sure, why not. Femejism is certainly a reflection of where our heads and hearts were at during the time we wrote and recorded it.
We are a lifestyle magazine: can you describe your style and fashion addiction?
Lindsey: I grew up thrifting. I don’t it as much these days; maybe I don’t have as much patience to dig as I did when I was younger, but when you do find something extraordinary it makes it all worth it. There’s so much great modern fashion that is influenced by the past, you almost don’t need to thrift anymore. But, I am due for some new threads, so maybe see ya at the flea market…
Your best spots in L.A.
For shopping? Squaresville. It’s a great vintage spot. For chilling? My house in Eagle Rock.
This is our ‘Light’ issue. Can you send us a special quote?
Mood lighting is everything. Salt crystal lamps are our personal favourite.
