THE TERM HIP HOP IS DEFINED AS A CULTURAL MOVEMENT ORIGINATED IN THE BRONX IN 1973. THE FIRST STEPS IN THIS DIRECTION WERE MOVED BY DJ KOOL HERC, COMPETING WITH DJ AFRIKA BAMBAATAA, IS SAID TO HAVE INVENTED THE TERM HIP HOP TO DESCRIBE HIS' 'BEAT STYLE’.
The hearts of the movement were the party blocks, that is, the street festivals in which young African Americans and Latin Americans interacted by playing, dancing and singing. Largely influenced by blues, dub and funky rhythms, hip hop music is characterized by a singing-talked by a Mc -Masters of Ceremonies-commonly known as Rapper, and a musical base composed of percussion and sampled sounds. From the music, the fashion world was also influenced by street wear, a style born in the early 1980s inspired by sneaker cultures and hipsters from the southeast of New York. Over time however, street wear flanked and then integrated into the hip hop culture that in the same years conquered rap, DJs, break dance, graffiti and ghettos of the American east coast. In those years the hip-hop music icons of the time were dressed in colorful gymnastic suits, military jackets, bomber shoes, Clarks shoes, Dr. Martens boots and sneakers usually adidas with maxi laces.
Among the popular accessories are sunglasses, fishing caps, custom belts and plaits, chain necklaces and gold rings to be in the mood old school. The wide pants became popular with rappers, later on, with the time they promoted a more pop style wearing baseball caps and lively and fluorescent clothes. Hip hop fashion influenced the most prestigious gangways in this period, where the Gangsta rap became one of Hip Hop’s most popular styles and mid-nineties. The West Coast rappers adopted the style of a Los Angeles Hispanic gang, the Chicano Gangsters, also known as Cholo’s style: wide pants, black tattoos, bandana and shirt out. Also the way to wear the low belt pants is a peculiarity of the style that originated in jail. This style, associated with the West Coast’s landmark mentality, was initially adopted by young Afro-Americans in Los Angeles and then by the entire hip hop community. From yesterday to today this style influences our streets and fashion, today we can see how much this style has returned and how much iconic pieces continue to gravitate in our closets as accessories and must-have garments.
