Hello Formation! You are a five-piece band, can you briefly describe each of you?
Will Ritson (vocals, lyrics) is a visual artist, writer and poet and has his own book publishing company. Multi-instrumentalist Matt Ritson (keys) is a stellar photographer. Jonny Tams (bass) spent his teens fiddling with broken synths before going on to work with producers like Spike Stent and Stephen Street, as well as artists including Björk and Russell Haswell. Kai Akinde-Hummel (drums) is fluent in three languages, and his grandfather was part of Nigerian trumpeter Dr Victor Olaiya’s band, the same one Fela Kuti played with. Sasha Lewis (synths) has patched modular synths with the likes of Four Tet, Caribou and Floating Points.
Disco grove and punk attitude: what’s else is inside your music?
Jazz, Chinese tea and 19th century pessimist philosophy.
Your shows are pure energy: how do you feel when you are on stage and how you like to interact with your public?
We feel alive. When we connect with the fans we all share a true power. Togetherness. It’s the most important thing in life.
How’s the current music scene in London? What’s your favorite spot in town right now?
There are some great bands coming through on smaller labels, the best scene is at a venue called the Brixton Windmill, all the best unknown bands roll through there! It’s the last real punk/DIY venue in South London.
Look At The Powerful People: can you tell some behind the scenes of the album, inspirations and… who are ‘The Powerful People’?
You are the inspiration. You are the Powerful People.
