JAMES MERRY WAS BORN IN A SMALL TOWN IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM. ENGLAND IS THE PLACE WHERE HE STARTED HIS EDUCATIONAL PATH. HE STUDIED ANCIENT GREEK AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY, BUT TODAY HIS JOB IS SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT. HE IS CONSIDERED AN EMBROIDERY ARTIST.
It all started seven years ago, in London, when Björk was looking for an assistant to help her out with her new project, Biophilia. After a few virtual exchanges of ideas and a business lunch, James moved to New York to collaborate on the project. He became, and still is, the singer’s faithful assistant, skillfully creating lace headpieces that look like alien heads that she flaunts on stage or at public events.
James’ work does not focus only on music as he likes to explore various worlds like sportswear. He uses embroidery to create logos for well-known brands like Nike, Umbro or Fila. Each of the embroidered pieces is inspired by plants that grow in Iceland, where his studio is located. Fascinating creations that blend the brands with nature, often the constant thread of many artistic experimentations
