DISCOVER MORE THROUGH OUR INTERVIEW.
Hello Kyle, thank you for your time and welcome to Italy! Sun is shining and we all look forward to tonight’s gig.
Hello! Yes, we are in town and excited to be here.
From a ‘competition winner’ band to one of the biggest, selling more than 4 million copies for a single. How has the band changed after the success?
Thank you but despite the success, there are no huge egos in the band. Because our music comes from Dan’s laptop, from our bedrooms, from the studio, all quite normal and modest.
And did the success influnced in a way your second album?
With the first album we have been very lucky hitting so many people but we never tried to replicate the success, no pressure with ourselves; we really wanted to have this second album and it came very naturally: we tried to make that as diverse as possible and it’s really electronic and hip-hop based, as well as everything in-between.
Let’s keep on speaking about ‘Wild World’: which are the inspirations and styles of the album?
Well, you know, in this second album we sort of evolved the sound and the inspiration is a kind of hip hop mixtape with samples and soundbites from old films and documentaries. Wild World is a real band effort and it’s a reaction about what’s happening in the world right now through tv and media and it was recorded in a windowless basement studio below an industrial estate in Battersea.
How’s playing the album live? Are you happy with that?
It’s amazing! It’s gonna be fun tonight and people who came to the gig so far really enjoyed and sang with us the songs… very very nice.
How’s your typical day when you are on tour?
We usually drive overnight on a tour bus and when we arrive in town we wake up and go for a short walk, trying to see some sights if we are in a new place or go for a run. Generally if we have time we really try to have a look around. Sometimes we get also inspired to write and we use the time for this as well.
Which are the skills that make Bastile such a great band?
I guess… well i don’t know actually, it’s a difficul question (laughs). Being a band the very first step is the song and the songwriting, it’s a like if you are building a house, you want the very first brick to be perfect. And musically is the same. Dan is just amazing in this, he is able to collect our messages and vision and put them into words for a song. We are a very good match and each of us four bring something special in the group.
