First new hotel on the lake in decades, Il Sereno designed by Patricia Urquiola opened in Torno on the shores of Lake Como. 30 oversized suites all overlooking the water with their own terraces are meticulously furnished by Urquiola who also envisioned every facet of the hotel from the architecture to the custom furniture, from rugs, wall coverings and lamps to bathroom fixtures.
Patricia Urquiola likes to call Il Sereno “a hotel of architecture” and explains that the inspiration comes from the rationalism of Giuseppe Terragni’s Casa del Fascio, also located in Como, but in a contemporary way. The hotel’s centrepiece is an original “floating” stairwell made with walnut wood encased in bronze. The earthy tones of grey and walnut with touches of blues and greens matches the colours of the surroundings, Patricia Urquiola ensured that the lake is always present in the hotel’s design. Three works of art by the acclaimed botanist Patrick Blanc throughout the garden complete the architecture.
