POEM BAKER IS A FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER BASED IN LONDON. RAISED IN A SMALL TOWN IN SUFFOLK, SHE BEGAN HER ARTISTIC CAREER IN THEATER AND PERFORMANCE ART. IN 2010 SHE ATTENDED A COURSE IN PHOTOGRAPHY AT THE LONDON COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION, FROM THERE SHE BEGAN HER GREATEST PASSION FOR THE DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY
Self-taught photographer, has created one of her biggest projects since 2010 with “Hymns from the bedroom”, a personal diary of friends and people she met on the streets of London. The photo series is divided into three chapters that go from 2010 to 2015. The photographs show youthful portraits of artists and performers, musicians, actors, designers, strippers and those who live on the margins of society. Every documentation tells the story of the subject, with his daily creative activities, both real and aspirational. These candid, intimate and sometimes subversive portraits explore the themes of gender, sexuality, relationships and family, in a sub-cultural context. A unique representation of people who escape the compliance in favor of a self-expression, for those who go beyond cultural boundaries and gender roles to reveal something raw, genuine and courageous. The subjects of Baker are pioneers and visionaries who will scratch the surface of what they will become. The photographs of the series immortalize a moment of excitement and self-exploration, a transformative nature that lays bare the people portrayed.
