REDMILK MEETS THE ARTIST, DESIGNER AND BRITISH ILLUSTRATOR JULIE VERHOEVEN. IN HER CAREER SHE HAS CREATED A UNIQUE UNIVERSE MADE OF COLORS AND FORMS IN WHICH ART IS THE ONLY KEYWORD.
Your art is recognizable by the color, the use of various artistic media and by your subversive touch. How the artistic chaos influences your style in the creation of your works?
I need to immerse myself in an excess of imagery to provoke an artist response. I visually digest the maximum and wait to see what surfaces from this debris in my head. Its usually the same repetitive icons that re-surface, disappointingly.
How would you describe your art to to someone who doesn’t know you?
Color, shape, pattern, collage, mess, dirt and boobs and bums.
In your works you show the femininity and not only in the artistic view, what is sexuality for Julie?
Its a powerful, enviable tool I somewhat I lack , but can exploit through an artists output.
Tell me something about your fashion debut with the designer John Galliano ..
Fond memories of youth , naivety , and the unadulterated joy and excitement of fashion , theatrics and all things camp . It was the perfect start, slightly unhinged yet vibrant and fast.
You have collaborated with some fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, Versace and many others, did you find challenging the aesthetically satisfy of the brand identity?
I have a a rather annoying personality trait where I like to please and I do love a brief if Im honest, so I would make it my goal to adapt.
London for Julie is:
like a warm comfort blanket
What do you think about the situation that is in the air in London now?
I feel shame and bewilderment.
What are, in your opinion, the emerging artists to watch in London?
I am a big fan of Paul Kindersley , and 2 designers who are more like
artists , ‘Rottingdean Bazaar’
You’re considered one of the most important artists in the Londoners view, how is changed the art over the years since you started to today? You think that London is still the metropole of art?
I have no idea . It works for me to be here but thats just being lazy.
A band, a book and a movie that could represent you …
Sylvester, I always wanted to be black and fabulous! Gestures by Desmond Morris; Speaking without saying anything – perfect bliss for me! Martha, by Fassbinder – my default emotional state!
Describe yourself with three adjectives ..
Pale, yellow and anxious!
Julie motto is:
“Smile and the world smiles with you …(through gritted teeth)!”
