BEST SUMMER BY: KATHRYNA HANCOCK

A SERIE OF BRIEF AND FUN Q&A ABOUT SUMMER. LEARN MORE ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHER KATHRYNA HANCOCK’S VACATIONS

. Your dream destination:

I want to go literally EVERYWHERE. I love to travel! I think in this moment, my dream destination would be Tangier, for its rich history, and vibrant colorful culture and cityscapes.

. The best company to have during a journey:

My partner Jerry Gorin is my constant travel companion. We try to get out of the city as often as possible, even if its just for a weekend. I think expectations are the vacation killer—so it’s important to travel with people that are easy-going and open to spontaneity and trying new things.

. Your summer playlist:

I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, so I currently have Talking Heads on repeat. If you’re away from home, ‘This Must Be The Place’ is the perfect song to re-orient yourself.

. The coolest drink or dish you tried (and photographed) while on vacation?

I was recently in Kyoto where I had a full Kaiseki meal—which is a type of Japanese fine dining. The menu is set by the chef, and meant to be a perfect balance of  tastes, textures, and color. You get several small dishes over a few hours, while you sit on the floor barefoot sipping hot Schochu and enjoying conversation. Everything is so beautiful and artfully presented that you don’t want to eat it!

. What shouldn’t miss from the “holiday bag” of a photographer?

Besides my Contax T3 camera, The most important thing in my bag is my journal, where I keep track of my impressions and feelings. I always make sure to find some alone time for reflection and grounding when I’m away from home, especially if I’m traveling with others.
