THE NEW ZINE WHERE CREATIVE PEOPLE SHARE THEIR OBSESSION
Nearly 20 yrs later from the publication of “Cheap Date”, the low-budget quarterly magazine created by Bay Garnett (stylist and contributing editor to British Vogue) and Kira Joliffe (stylist and journalist) present to the world their latest project: FANPAGES, a limited-edition hardcover book, published by IDEA.
The zine consist in 112 pages of fandom, a series of collages and illustrations by creative minds like Nick Knight, Simone Rocha, Chloë Sevigny, Jemima Kirke, Louis Theroux, Stella Tennant and many more…
With FANPAGES Garnett and Joliffe have honed in on another aspect of their teenage years: the time-honored ritual of decorating their bedrooms with their obsession. “I did always have pinboards with loads of different images – I liked the chaos of it all… It was an organic, natural progression – this idea of having a space where people could make fanpages again” says Joliffe.
The brief sent out to contributors was simple: to make a single-page fanzine dedicated to anything each contributor was obsessed with. The results are simultaneously unexpected and deeply personal.
The first person they approached was Chloë Sevigny, shot by Garnett for the cover who also contributed pictures of her favorite teenage hertthrobs.
While Louis Theroux illustrates and narrates his heroes from Tony Adams to Marlon Brando, Katie Grand shares intimate photos of her wedding, artist Zac Sadler presents a hand-painted homage to Prince and Rodarte’s sisters, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, pay tribute to their favorite poets.
The cut&paste collage and lovingly hand-drawn aesthetic of the pages acts as a glorious riposte to nowadays effect of Instagram and Pinterest: in the era of digital moodboards, fabulous as they are but also easily unvaried, the manual labour that goes into the layout of personal collage are something refreshing – a vision for sore eyes!
FAN PAGES is on sale at DSM London and New York, Comme des Garçons Trading Museum Paris, Marc Jacobs Bookmarc and selected stores around the world and via www.ideanow.online
