GRACE MICELI

REDMILK MEETS THE YOUNG ARTIST GRACE MICELI, FOUNDER OF THE PLATFORM ART BABY GIRL. A CREATIVE WEBSITE WHERE YOUNG ARTISTS EXPLORE THEIR IMAGINATIVE UNIVERSE

How was born of your artistic project Art baby girl, what’s the concept behind it?

I wanted a platform to exhibit work made by my friends and peers who were at the beginning of their artistic careers. So when I graduated college I couldn’t afford to open an actual gallery, so I turned to the internet.

Which is the relationship between your crew and internet?

It’s awesome, after years of being internet friends now that I travel a lot for work I’m able to meet & hang out with and become good friends with artists I’ve only known online.

Tell us whats art for you and your crew…

I can’t speak about what art means for anyone besides myself, it’s a medium through which I find empowerment & pleasure and Art Baby Gallery aims to be a platform for others to feel comfortable to do that as well

What makes you different from other women’s groups?

Art Baby isn’t a “women’s group” I showcase work primarily made by females but I have also curated cis men & non-binary artists as well. I’m not interested in purposely excluding any type of person, but I also just happen to not be interested in most work made by straight cis white men.

A source of inspiration in the creation of your website

It was the only type of gallery I was able to create at the time, design wise it is very influenced by basic web design I learned as a teenager on livejournal.com

Which are the aims of your group?

To provide a platform for artists who are traditionally underrepresented in the art world, and to encourage creativity

What means for you the phrase “Girl Power”

It’s a watered down term to make feminism more appealing to the general public, theres nothing wrong with the phrase but feminism is much more than just “Girl Power”.

Tell us how you initially form your group

I’ve been reaching out to & connecting with artists on the internet for years, so my network of people who I collaborate with naturally has grown over time

Is there a new artist that you should keep an eye on?

Maya Martinez is an artist from Baltimore who I’m really excited to start working with, she will be the next artist exhibiting on Art Baby Gallery.
