There is a new girl in town! Meet Giulia, the newest hotel of the Spanish Room Mate Hotels chain in Milan designed by Patricia Urquiola just behind Piazza del Duomo. Third in Italy, adding to those in Florence, Room Mates Luca and Isabella.
For Giulia, Patricia Urquiola created a unique atmosphere for the hotel with familiar elements of Milan. The pink marble in the hotel lobby floor is the same used in Duomo. The tridimensional wall is made of terracotta bricks, another typical feature of the city. The ribbed glass used in the bar and side tables is a reminder of the old trams. The rooms refer to typical Milanese indoors with a twist. The high boiserie, recurrent geometric patterns of the wallpaper and fabrics represent the rigour of the city and also the graphic arts, an important element of its cultural history.
Patricia Urquiola collaborated with Cassina Contract for the fit out of the hotel and custom-made furniture. Many of the furniture bear her own signature from Andreu World, Glas Italia, Kartell, Kettal, Moroso and Very Wood. The architect included other important pieces from the Milanese design history in her project such as Marco Zanuso’s Lady and Franco Albini’s Tre Pezzi armchairs by Cassina, Joe Colombo’s Coupé lamp by Oluce customised for Giulia.
