Our first stop is at Twin Farms in Barnard, Vermont – USA, a unique country estate get-away for all seasons situated on over three hundred acres of wildflower meadows, hardwood forests, ancient gardens and private ponds, just ten miles north of picturesque Woodstock.
Twin Farms was originally owned by Nobel prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis and journalist Dorothy Thompson. As Dorothy grew frail, her family sold off parcels of the land in 1958. Thurston Twigg-Smith acquired the property as a second home for his family in 1974. In the late 19080’s Twigg-Smiths decided to launch Twin Farms as Bed and Breakfast with the opening of the first nine rooms on October 1, 1993. Five additional cottages were added in 1995 and 1996, and more accolades followed. The completion of spa treatment rooms, Chalet, Aviary, and the Farmhouse at Copper Hill in 2005 brought the number of accommodations to 20, where it remains today. Though the ownership now includes several partners, guests continue to embrace Twin Farms —and Twigg-Smith’s vision of a sophisticated escape steeped in playful romance — as their own second home.
Guests at Twin Farms can explore the forest, meadows and ponds by foot or bike independently or request a guide with the miles of groomed trails, hills and views that invite moderate or strenuous recreation in the verdant forest: nature is vast and all to be explored. Guests can also enjoy stream side yoga on the property’s brand new yoga deck to truly be emerged in nature.
Twin Farms is an all-inclusive Relais & Chateaux property and only five-star resort in Vermont set admist 300 acres of lush meadowlands. Twin Farms features twenty distinctive lodgings that features king-size feather beds and sitting areas with wood-burning fireplaces that open onto screened porches. Whimsical cottages are tucked away in the property’s secluded woodlands.
