How was the property born?
Ancient property of the family Doria D’Angri, the property was purchased in the early ‘900 by the Pastore family of which we are the direct heirs. In those days it was the place of residence of the nobility of Naples and hosted galas, dinners and small concerts in its many rooms. Driven by a desire to stop time and share the atmosphere of a unique place, since 2002 we have decided to revive the spirit of welcoming, getting the audience in an atmosphere rich in history. To note the memorial plaque on the facade of the Torre Grimalda that is in remembrance of the visit of the Prince of Savoy in 1932, with whom Renato Pastore entertained personally reports for selection of thoroughbred horses bred on the estate.
What is your connection with nature?
Since our childhood we came into close contact with the nature. Life has brought us between Rome and Milan but not turn away from what today has become our passion. Today we are dedicated full time to the activities of the property, but we never fail to carve out a space for ourselves to take care of the garden and when we can welcome personally the guests and guide them with great dedication to the discovery of these unique places. The love of nature is passed down from generation to generation and this is breathed in every corner of the estate, among the flowers always in order, the soft green meadows, lush trees and the beauty of ornamental plants.
What makes the estate a special place?
Nestled in a fertile plain between the Amalfi Coast and the Cilento, a few kilometers from Salerno, Paestum and Agropoli, the property looks like a place out of time. We get lost in rooms full of history of the manor house, reliving the atmosphere of our ancestors in the exhibition hall of the carriages. Or take a walk in the pristine green, the discovery of more than 400 plant species. Stop in the courtyard of the old dairy farm to enjoy a herbal tea and freshly picked fruit in Giardino Dell’Orto. A book in the shade of Silos, a chat in the avenue of roses. This is the story of a timeless place.
The property is surrounded by several gardens, can you describe them?
The Porta di Ferro Gardens are intended as a reference point for the territory in spreading the culture of green and landscape, being by nature a crossroads of culture, people and different stories now also expressed in visual form and its gardens.
The design of the gardens begins in the ’20s with the introduction of avenues of plane trees, cycads and palms of the Canaries. The turning point occurs in the second half of the century with the arrival of many plants as Magnolia grandiflora, Araucaria excelsa, Pinus pinea, Pomegranates, Hydrangeas, Bougainvillea, climbing roses, Bignonia and shrubbery. These are the basic elements of the first of the gardens of the estate: the Garden Novecento.
In recent years, the creative force and the profound desire of new spaces in the balance between rural landscape and contemporary influences, were born the Giardino dell’Orto, Giardino dei Silos and Giardino delle Sperimentazioni as it combines elements of water and ephemeral landscapes . From 2013 they have become part of the circuit Great Italian Gardens.
