GAZELLE TWIN IS THE CREATION OF BRIGHTON-BASED PRODUCER, COMPOSER AND ARTIST ELISABETH BERNHOLZ. ON STAGE SHE IS A HOODED ENIGMA THAT PLAYS A DARK AND DEPRAVED JOURNEY INTO THE REMOTE CELLS OF HER SUBCONSCIOUS
WITHOUT THE MASK AND HER EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC, SHE IS A GOOD-LOOKING AND CHARMING GIRL AND THIS MAKES HER A UNIQUE AND SINGULAR MUSICIAN. WE MET HER BEHIND THE SCENES AT VASTO SIREN FESTIVAL, ON ITS SECOND EDITION, IN THE LOVELY SETTING OF VASTO OLD TOWN FOR A CHAT AFTER HER GIG
Ciao Elisabeth, it’s funny to see you without your performing mask… Despite the heat today you did a great show here at Siren Fest. I saw you putting your head in the fan for a second…
(Laughs) Yes, that was good. I am not used to this temperature but it’s just great to be in Italy and to play here. I can’t complain and usually weather in London you know how it is…
Can you tell me the concept that shape Gazelle Twin?
It a solo project that i write and it’s a kind of lots of different themes i work through. Each album i made has a different concept and identity. I like to deeply perform through what i do. I’ve done two albums so far and for this last one we have been touring since last october and is going great, i did not expect to do so many shows.
Your first album and second one. Do you feel how different it is?
I think that i wanted this second record to be very different from my first one on purpose. I had like 2/3 years gap in between, i took me a short while to find the inspiration and start writing this one, to get the ideas together and get the time to do it as i was always doing other jobs. I wanted to sound to be more simpler and more fun to perform it on stage and i’m happy which what i got.
I read that Ridley Scott used one of your song for one of his movie. Are you interested in doing more in film industry?
Absolutely, it’s kind of where i began when i studied music. I started with the goal to write music for films, i have always been interested to write for visual picture so i still kind of work on this line even if in a different way but films is something that keeps come to me and working on a soundcheck at the moment – not under Gazelle Twin – with another name. It something anyway that i want to explore and develop more; not perform it of course as don’t perform that music that i very different and essential. There’s so much visual stuff at the moment around and everything has a visual expression.
Do you think that your visual approach makes you music more singular?
Oh well, i hope so. When i start writing music i always start from a picture, so music for me comes later after i create a visual identity and concept.
Is there a photographer of visual artist that inspires you in terms of imagery?
For sure there is but at this moment my mind goes completely blank, sorry. Not in photography right now but lots of sculpture inspire my work. There’s for example an Australian artist called Patricia Piccinini http://www.patriciapiccinini.net – that surely has italians origin – that makes incredible sculture and creatures, like alien kind of mixture.
Where are you off next?
We are doing a gig in London in Hackney and then a festival in Belgium called Pukkelpop. And then we are going to Singapore – it’s a festival in Manchester that does an happening there and it was an amazing opportunity – and that one is going to be another hot show like the one today in Vasto! We can’t wait for that.
Which are your future projects?
I am writing my third album that i aimed to have it for next year so that’s the main focus right now even if i have few collaboration upcoming… that i can’t reveal at this stage.
Thank you Elisabeth!
Thank you for having me!
