WE MET SIMON MILNER, GARY BARBER AND KIRSTIE FLECK FROM IS TROPICAL, AN ELECTRO-ROCK BAND FROM EAST LONDON, RIGHT AFTER THEIR EXCITING GIG AT VASTO SIREN FESTIVAL, ITALY. WHILE BEAUTIFUL KIRSTIE SURVIVED DOING BAREFOOT STAGE DIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF CORTILE PALAZZO D’AVALOS, WE HAD A CHAT WITH SIMON AND GARY
Hello all, great show tonight! Is this your first time in Vasto?
Simon and Gary: Thank you! Yes, not first time in Italy but indeed in Vasto. Tomorrow we fly to Valencia for Arena Sound Festival, then Santader and Santiago; probably it’s going to be even more hotter than here! We are not used to this heat!
Well, Gary, i can’t believe you are wearing a leather jacket tonight…
Gary: Me too (he laughs), but despite the hot weather this is always part of my look.
Hot temperature are part of the fascination of summer and you have also a name that inspires it!
Simon: Yes, that’s true even if we are trying to make our music not ‘tropical’. People keep asking us if we do tropical music but we don’t, we get lots of messages on soundcloud for this.
Is Tropical sounds also of holidays. Which is your favorite destination?
Gary: Mexico! We love it. We have spent some time in Tulum before our gig in Mexico City and that place is just so beautiful, with amazing beaches. Just incredible. And there’s a good music crowd. We did played at a festival in Monterey.
Where are you going after Spain?
Gary: Well, we still have few festivals and then we go back home even if we do not play often there.
When was the last time you played in London?
Gary and Simon: Not long ago, about two months, in Hackney. Very cool because it was our first day of our UK tour, so nice to play at home and above all play new stuff as people know our songs.
And then we are off to Iceland for two gigs with a friend. Next are Colombia and Mexico. Maybe we will add some shows in America. We are trying to get everywhere around the world.
How do you like Asia?
Simon and Gary: Oh it’s amazing. We did play in Beijing and Shanghai. Even if culturally they are very different from Europe but we have a lot of ex-patriots there. In Beijing we did play the opening of an hotel and before there was the burlesque show of Dita Von Teese, very strange gig and crowd… very drunk, really fucking drunk, they just fall over and over. We like a drunk crowd… like us (we all laughs).
Gary: our new album is nearly out, 4 songs are ready and we are going to release 6 more, probably out of beginning of october.
Simon: we recorded it in 5 continents, each with a vynil with the map on it. The idea came from the fact that we are touring so much that we did not have any more time to write. That’s why we did not write at home this time but on the road. For example we were in Mexico City and decided to stay 4 more days to write; then in NY in a studio and in Spain we stayed in a house through Airbnb and became very good friends with the owner that came also to visit us in London.
Sounds really great, we all look forward to listen to it! Thanks again for your time.
Thank you, see you later on there beach for the party.
