SIRIUSMODESELEKTOR IS THE COMBINATION OF THREE INSPIRED TALENTS (SIRIUSMO + MODESELEKTOR + PFADFINDEREI): MORITZ FRIEDRICH, AKA SIRIUSMO, TALENTED ARTIST AND VINTAGE KEYBOARD COLLECTOR AND GERNOT & SEBASTIAN AKA MODESELEKTOR (WITH THEIR INARGUABLE GROOVES) PERFORMED TOGETHER AT SÓNAR BY NIGHT IN THIS BRAND NEW PROJECT. WE MEET TWO OF THEM ON SATURDAY AT SÓNAR D+
Hi Guys! Nice to meet you here at Sónar 2015. Can you briefly introduce yourself for Redmilk?
Modeselektor: Hello RedMilk, my name is Szary. For pilot is ‘Sierra Zulu Alfa Romeo Yankee’. Sebastian Szary.
Siriusmo: Excuse him, he loves planes, that’s why he is dressed like this. (laughs)
Modeselektor: (smiles) And this next to me is Siurismo.
Siurismo: Yes, i am Moritz Friedrich, aka Siriusmo.
How long have you been doing music together for?
S: We started few months ago this project because we wanted to play our own music together.
M: We know each other since early ’90s. The thing is that before we had no time. But we started talking about this again when we played together with Moderat.
S: Yes, we have been friends for so long and it was just the right time to do it.
And you knew it could work very well…
S: Yes, we have something in common; well the guys (looking at Modeselektor) are more techno, more dance floor, instead i’ve always been a studio guy, more experimental sometimes. Not that you (pointing Szary) you don’t do experimentals things (they both laughs)
M: I am not experimental (he laughs)
S: We really enjoy our old stuff… and I’m on Monkeytown too.
M: Actually Moritz was the reason why we founded Monkeytown (their label record)
It’s a actually a very long name Sirusmodeselektor
M: It’s true but we have also a shorter version that is SMS.
(they both laught).
Are you touring the whole summer?
M: Yes, we are, mainly Europe, even if a show in Asia or South America would have been great. But there are plenty of nice festivals here around and it will be fun.
What do you expect from the project?
M: We go on tour with mostly old tracks converted in a new way but for the moment we are not going to start to develop new music.
S: Yes, so far we are enjoying playing our old stuff, it’s really more about enjoying what we have done so far. We really started because we like and admire the work of each other.
You’ll be playing in Turin for Kappa Future Festival and Milan for Social Music City next month. How do you like our country?
M: We love coffee.
S: My tee is a statement today. (Moritz shows his t-shirt with a coffeemaker)
M: We love Italy and i have to say that nearly after 20 years of touring we see finally that the italian music scene is changing in a better way and improving. There’s more music knowledge now. I remember the show we played in Italy… i have to say… it was, let’s say, terrible, not to be rude. Now we know a lot of good italian musicians, i see a really good movement. Particularly in Turin, there are great artists. I take the chance to say hello to one of them: Ciao, Vaghe Stelle. Funny note: I lost my luggage on that show. We were supposed to play in Florence and the flight stopped in Milan so we had to took a car and drive there. I drove a fiat panda, what an adventure.
How does Berlin influence your music style?
M: Berlin for us is a place to live. It’s our hometown.
S: We grew up there. I am an East Berliner.
M: It’s interesting how the city was divided and now you see the different scenes and people, makes the city very interesting.
S: The last 3/4 years there has been so many artists coming to Berlin, because it’s a relaxing place.
M: I know also of people that left the city because they could’t live there anymore but i still find it very appealing.
What shall we expect for your Sónar show?
M: A very compact, intense, Seriusmodeselektor show with 3 guys on stage. One on the right with a red suits (laughts),
S: One playmobile guy (laughs). I’ll be at the keyboard.
M: And video show from the Berlin Visual Studio Pfadfinderei who are regular collaborators with us. And i can say that after 10 shows, we really feel the fun on stage and hope we are transmitting this to the public.
S: We don’t invent new music, it’s really just fun fun fun.
Can each of you tell be a word that describe the Sónar vibe?
M: Beer, Friends, Fun.
S: She said one! (they both laughs)
M: Ok. i would say ‘Congrats’. This festival is just nice, amazing how is getting bigger and better every year. Chapeau to all the team.
