REDMILK MEETS VESSELS

Lee J. Malcolm, Martin Teff, Tim Mitchell, Tom Evans, Peter Wright are Leeds quintet Vessels. Anyone who has seen the band live recently know that Vessels have moved further, in a sonic vortex with less guitars and more electronic music. We met them at Cobianchi during Design Week Festival by Elita in Milan

WHO IS VESSELS?
We play electronic music, kind of inspired by techno with a variety of quite diverse influences and we have been together for 10 years. Most of us were at university in Leeds together and that’s where we met. At the beginning the band wasn’t that good but then we improved and understood that it was going to work. And we started!
Vessels? We debated lots of different names for a long time, we find it very hard to find one that could make everyone happy and this was the first one that worked for everyone.

WHAT ARE YOU PRESENTING AT DESIGN WEEK FESTIVAL
We are presenting mostly stuff from the new album. With Dilate we are hoping to have cemented what has been a long process of evolution from a mostly rock-based instrumental band dabbling in electronics to a fully electro and dance-orientated instrumental band. What we play tends to evolve time to time.

YOUR MUSIC IN 5 WORDS
Euphoric. Psychedelic in a way. Dancy. Energy. Emotional.

AN EPIC ALBUM THAT INSPIRED YOUR MUSIC STYLE
Swim by Caribou.
And Battles in general, we have a bit of their technique in our music.

BEING BRITISH: strengths and weaknesses
Well, England is quite a small promising island where he weather is quite crap but you have band anywhere and we think that the fact that lots of bands sing in English is an advantage for us.
A country to notice is maybe Iceland instead that has such a small population and there’s so much people into music. (i mentioned when i went to Iceland Airwaves Festival few years ago and we all agreed that it’s an amazing and inspiring country).
