Born in Dusseldorf and grown up in Detroit, Sekuoia is a project by 22-years old danish producer Patrick Bech-Madsen. His Music, based on guitar melodies, deep bass and screwed vocals, combines the organic with the electronic in a dreamy meltdown. We met him at Co-Bianchi during Elita Design Week Festival
WHO IS SEKUOIA
My name is Patrick Alexander Bech-Madsen, i am 22 years old, living in Copenhagen. I’ve been producing music since 4/5 years. I was born in Germany, near Dusseldorf, lived there until i was 4, then i moved to Detroit until i was 8 and then to Denmark, where i like a lot to live. The name i am using on stage came quite random: i was traveling a lot with my parents in America and it came from one of the parks – Sekuoia National Park -; i felt it was perfect for me, fit the project; i like the idea that people are able to spell and google it.
WHAT ARE YOU PRESENTING AT DESIGN WEEK FESTIVAL
We will playing a set that ia mixture of what i’ve been doing with some old songs and 3 unreleased tracks.
YOUR MUSIC IN 5 WORDS
Dreamy. Lofi. Ambient. Personal. Experimental.
IF WE SAY HOLIDAY YOU SAY…?
I would say: right now! I am much looking forward to a break now even if i really like traveling and playing at the same time. It’s so good to be here in Italy right now while in Copenhagen there are just 10 degrees! I just packed tees and shorts. Tonight is the birthday of my drummer so we are looking forward to celebrate and party in town.
AN EPIC ALBUM THAT INSPIRED YOUR MUSIC STYLE
I think is going to be The Last Resort by Trentmoller. He really inspired me to listen to electronic music as he has been so important in Denmark music scene. Such a visionary artists.
BEING DANISH: strengths and weaknesses
I think people there tend to do dark and quite emotional music. The influence from Sigur Ros and many other scandinavian/nordic artists for example is very strong. I listen to a lot of music coming also from L.A. but with no doubt being from Denmark get you close to a very precise and defined culture.
