REDMILK HAS INTERVIEWED DEAN AND DAN CATEN, THE DYNAMIC DUO BEHIND THE DSQAURED2 BRAND, WHICH, THIS YEAR MARKS ITS TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY. A QUICK-FIRE REPARTEE THAT REVEALS THE TRAITS AND PASSIONS OF THE CANADIAN DESIGNERS
What is your first memory connected to the world of fashion? Which of you approached it first?
In Canada, when we were children, we were already clear about what we would do as adults: fashion was the great passion for both of us. When we moved to NY in 1983 to attend the Parson’s School of Design, on the first day there a teacher told us, “If you don’t live and breathe for fashion this is not the place for you.” We exchanged a knowing glance and we said to ourselves: “We’re home”!
What are the steps of your creative process?
Working and living together it’s as if the creative process is never interrupted. Continually vying with one another and the constant exchange of ideas between us is what stimulates our creativity. We’re identical twins and we’re a bit telepathic, in the sense that often one of us begins a sentence and the other automatically finishes it; it’s a kind of absurd fashion table tennis, a brainstorming session without end.
Does your concept of beauty coincide, or are you searching for a meeting point?
Our concept of beauty coincides most of the time. When an idea is not convincing either of us, we prefer to abandon it and seek a compromise that satisfies us both.
In all your collections is there one in particular that you remember, or that you are really fond of?
We remember all our shows and we can tell anecdotes, or what has gone on behind the scenes, about each one, but, maybe the fashion show we are most fond of is Star 24-7. It was the show that launched our first women’s wear line; all the top models walked for us. There was the fuselage of a huge plane on stage, the music and the energy, everything was amazing …
This year your Dsquared2 brand celebrated its 20th anniversary: What are the most important moments of your career, and the highest goal you have achieved up to now?
In the last twenty years we have seen the world of Dsquared2 grow and amplify. We have worked hard but we have also been rewarded by a lot of satisfactions. The meeting with Madonna was decisive in our career, but one of the moments that thrilled us most was the opening of our first single brand store in Milan in 2007. In any event, we prefer to view this anniversary as a new starting point rather than an achievement. These last 20 years have been an amazing adventure but we are ready now for the next 20. It’s time to speed up, to build and create.
A personality from the past that you would have enjoyed dressing:
Ava Gardner: so sensual, so elegant.
If your life were a movie, who would you like as the director, and which actor should play your parts?
We would play ourselves. As for the choice of the director, we need a bit of time …
