It goes without saying that the Belgian band Amatorski is unique in its kind. With a name taken from the Polish word for amateurish, the band is combining an enormous versatility with a consistent and captivating sound. Amatorski naturally keep their eyes on the future, without trying too hard to be futuristic. Compared to the likes of Portishead and Sigur Rós, they introduced their melancholic dreamy sound to a wider audience with 2010 debut album "Same Stars We Shared"
As artists, they not only meticulously elaborate their songs, but are also continually remodeling their own musical identity.
We met them at the unique location of Co-Bianchi in Piazza Duomo, Milan, for Elita Design Week Festival.
WHO IS AMATORSKI?
I am Inne Eysermans for vocals, piano, guitar, synths.
And i am Sebastiaan Van den Branden, guitar, backing vocals, synths of the band.
We are from Belgium and the band was formed in 2009. We met at the conservatory in Gent where we start playing together.
WHAT ARE YOU PRESENTING AT DESIGN WEEK FESTIVAL
This is our second time in Italy, we have been last year in Pordenone for a small festival, beautiful village. Tonight we will be playing our new album “From Clay To Figures”.
We will be also playing few songs from our previous works as we did as supporting band for Stromae when he was touring.
YOUR MUSIC IN 5 WORDS
Pop, versatile, experimental, avangarde. We think these are the words that describe better our style of music, someone mentioned that there’s no pop-music without avangarde and we like this sentence.
IF WE SAY HOLIDAY YOU SAY…?
Italy! (they both laughs). We are unfortunately leaving very early tomorrow so we won’t have much time to visit but we hope to be back soon. We love this country and its food!
AN EPIC ALBUM THAT INSPIRED YOUR MUSIC STYLE
Sebastian: For me is very difficult because i take inspiration from many and every month i discover new albums that i really like so it’s really impossibile to say one album.
Inne: For me is for sure Laurel Halo, her sound is so inspiring. I love her rhythm.
BEING BELGIAN: strengths and weaknesses
Inne: we are very shy and introvert as persons in our country, so i think sometimes this is a weak point when we have to present us to the world.
Sebastian: well, we have such an amazing music scene in our country and i guess we are a little bit spoiled about this.
