ART BASEL IS AN ANNUAL MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART EVENT THAT TAKES PLACE AT THREE LOCALES: IN MIAMI IN DECEMBER, HONG KONG IN MARCH, AND BASEL, SWITZERLAND IN JUNE
Art Basel’s show in Miami Beach returns this week for its 13th edition with 267 leading international galleries, drawn from 31 countries across North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. This year will mark the debut of “Survey”, a new sector dedicated to precise art-historical projects. In addition to showing premier artworks ranging from Modern masters to the latest contemporary pieces across five gallery sectors, many galleries will present works in Art Basel’s project-based sectors: Kabinett, Public and Film. The Art Basel show in Miami Beach will take place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 4 to 7, 2014.
Art basel is definitely one of Miami’s biggest events and attracts people from all over the globe.
Miami has everything you need: a blossoming art scene and a bustling nightlife that caters to all. Outside of the official fair itself, dozens of other fairs and pop-up galleries are held in the nearby. It can be quite difficult to keep up with everything Miami’s art scene has to offer this week, so here is a guide to help you hit all the others must-see galleries, collections, fairs and events:
SCOPE ART SHOW
The Scope International Contemporary Art Show brings together some of the lesser-known galleries and artists in one of the greatest fairs in the art scene. Along with offering an inside look into Miami’s vibrant art world, this year Scope has teamed up with VH1 to deliver a music experience throughout your visit.
Another top contemporary art fair, Art Miami sets up shop at the Midtown Miami complex to showcase some of the best works by artists from modern and contemporary artists. With over 150 galleries, the multi-faceted nature of Art Miami makes it a must-see fair during Basel week.
MARGULIES COLLECTION AT THE WAREHOUSE
For over 15 years, the non-profit Margulies Collection has dedicated itself to the presentation of exhibitions and educational platforms that explore the contemporary art scene. With works by artists like Anselm Kiefer, Richard Long, Leandro Erlich and Barbara Probst, the collection is an incredible compilation of some of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Perez Art Museum Miami, which was inaugurated just last year, houses one of the greatest collections in Miami. Showcasing works by renowned artists such as Ai Weiwei, Wifredo Lam, Robert Rauschenberg and Donald Judd, definitely worth a visit.
Conceived by Tony Goldman in 2009, the Wynwood Walls has become a Miami monument. The Walls is a complex of six separate buildings, each committed to showcasing the works of young and emerging street artists alongside small local restaurants. The mural is now the heart of Wynwood, attracting thousands of people to this cultural centre to explore the area’s incredible street art.
SCAD MUSEUM OF ART
Scad Museum will host “I fell ya: SCAD + André 3000 Benjamin”, the exhibition explores fashion, film and painting through the eyes of three dynamic artists: performer André 3000 Benjamin, filmmaker Greg Brunkalla and painter Jimmy O’Neal. It will be a socially dynamic conversation about language and context.
TV ON THE RADIO: A TUMBLR IRL
On Friday, December 5, 2014, Tumblr IRL hits Art Basel Miami, for the very first time, with a unique exhibition from TV on the Radio and their collaborator, Julian Gross. The band will play an intimate show while the creative minds immerse you into the visual story of their music.
