AS ANIMALS

THE DUO AS ANIMALS ARE THE PARISIAN REVELATION OF THE YEAR, WITH MUSICIAN FRÉDÉRIC GRANGE AND SINGER ZARA DESBONNES. THEIR SINGLE “I SEE GHOST (GHOST GUNFIGHTERS), WHICH IS A EUROPEAN SUCCESS, REFLECTS THEIR IDEA OF MUSIC: FREE, FLUID AND INTENSE. THE COUPLE TELLS REDMILK ABOUT THE INSPIRATION, INSTINCTS AND THEIR “ANIMAL” NATURE

Hi Fréderic, hi Zara. How are you?
Fine! Thank you !

When did you choose to transform music from passion into work?
Z: I’ve always wanted to express myself in art: at twelve years old I started to take singing lessons in parallel with my studies for a few years. After high school, I went to a music school, and it was there, during a concert, that I met Fred.

F: It’s more than a passion! It’s a way of life. I’ve always had bands: my first one goes back to when I was something like 12. I never think about it like a job; it’s just the way it is.

You two come from different musical worlds: how did your artistic encounter happen?
Two different musical worlds, but the same desire to create something new. We wanted to make a personal project; and it’s as simple as asking, “Do you want to do music ?” Then, As Animals was born! Sometimes things can be very simple, especially in music!

You are the composer, Fréderic, while Zara, you are the songwriter of the couple. Are the roles really so well defined?
Something like that, but the roles are not so defined. We have some ideas, we listen, talk about it etc…

When do you understand that a song is finished and ready?
Sometimes we can spend three days on a song and sometimes much longer! We have to imagine a lot of things before to know if it’s a good song. What instruments, sounds, tempo, arrangements etc… and sometimes it’s just a smile: we are happy at the same time.

What feelings did you experience while you were recording your first album?
Lots of feelings passed into this album. The first step in Malmo (Sweden) was amazing for us; then to see the studio of Tore Johansson! We were going to record with lots of instruments, gongs, any kind of piano or organ. This studio was a mix between a boat and a Balkan palace.

Then, during the recording of this album it was very special, we could go on our own rhythm; we spent 4 months in this studio, so we experienced lots of emotions.

On the other hand, what were those you experienced when the album came out?
We were really EXCITED! And we celebrated the release with a gig on a big Parisian stage.

An album to travel with body and mind?
It is important for us to make people travel with our music, as we like travelling, when we listen to some music, images that inspire us, emotions, countries, scenes of life.

Do you have a ritual before going on stage?
I throw glitter everywhere and on everybody and Fred tries to convince us to realize a human pyramid, that we’ve always managed to make!

What is the ghost that you have seen?
Ghosts in this song are very metaphoric, very full of imagery. They can be defenders or devils. Each one is free to interpret it with his own feelings.

You said that cinema is your major source of inspiration. What directors would you like to do the soundtrack for?
Z: Guillermo Del Toro or David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, Ridley Scott, but if the synopsis and the feeling is good, the name doesn’t matter. It would be a pleasure to work with any movie director.

Your latest love at first sight?
LORDE!

“Once upon a time there was a boy and a girl. Their passion for music brought them together and, step by step, in a very instinctive way, they have become… the As Animals… and…”. How could this story continue?
[…] Only time can tell… (it would make a nice album title by the way)!

A BIG thank you for this interview
