What is your earliest fashion memory?
My mothers white rhinestone cowboy boots and black fringed leather jacket – it was the 80’s. She also had a pair of high-waist snow-washed jeans to go with that & I think this affected me for the rest of my life.
What are the stages of your creative process?
I start with fabric – material. Then I go to forms. Form and material: same old ritual, same old dilemma as any other craft: stand back, look, approach again, grasp, feel, hesitate, then sudden activity then another long pause. My life is a constant paradox and my work reflects this. Fashion is ephemeral – a witness to our time of immediate and voracious consumption. Fashion is about the here and now, it only deals with today, never yesterday. By the same token – fundamentally I don’t believe in this system and way of life. I feel as if I express myself in 2 languages simultaneously.
How has your life and career changed since you started until now?
If only I could understand that myself! The changes have been far too innumerable and too far-reaching to list…everything has changed. Life was very different before I took on the courage to express my dreams. It’s as Stendhal wrote about the ‘crystallization’ of love… one moment you wake up, and nothing is ever the same again.
What are the most important moments of your career?
I don’t feel like I’ve gotten anywhere yet, actually. Success, the feeling of fulfillment, the notion of having achieved something important and the recognition of it are relative. I take life as it comes & sincerely every new collection is a challenge that makes you doubt all over again – it’s a never-ending cycle. If I had to pick one decisive moment however, I would say that it would be when I came back to the runway again for FW 2010/11. It was a very emotional moment in my life when I grew immensely as a person.
What is highest goal you have achieved?
I have always felt grateful to have always been able to follow my own path, to have always been able to be entirely faithful to myself, to my work & to those that I care for.
What sign do you want to leave in the fashion system?
No signs, just visions.
Is there a designer or company that you’d like to collaborate with?
Not really, but I would love to work on a project together with NASA.
In your opinion, what is beauty?
Beauty is everything except physical: purity, honesty, compassion, integrity, caring. Beauty is any and all values that are positive and kind and natural and moral. To quote an old saying: beauty comes from within.
A woman who represents beauty and style…
Do you have a place where you can find inspiration?
On the surface of everyday reality – In the deepest corner of my dreams.
A recurring dream?
Never being able to touch again, that which is right in front of me.
Your first rule to be happy?
Have faith. Have trust. Believe in your self and the future.
Any future projects?
Stitching things all back together.
